Yesterday's edition of the local paper featured this headline.
Glancing through the story, my first thought was "Yeah, that seems reasonable," accompanied by some mental fist-shaking at punks vandalizing park benches.
My second thought was that, were I reading this story in some context other than my town, I would likely be thinking exactly the opposite—surveillance state, how the cameras will be used for just about everything except preventing graffiti, who's watching the watchers, etc.
And that is exactly how this stuff happens. It starts out with the best of intentions, and people who should know better tell themselves (often for perfectly understandable reasons) that's it's okay in this case, because this case isn't like all those other ones that you read about.
