A touchscreen laptop would be a usability nightmare.

I really have to wonder how much of the clamoring for a touchscreen Mac is due to people who, used to using their finger on their phone and tablet all the time, find themselves absent-mindedly poking at the screen of their laptop or desktop out of habit.

I know I have done it myself more than once, usually when I’m sitting on the couch with my laptop on my lap. “Yeah,” I think to myself for a few seconds, “This thing should totally have a touchscreen!”

Then I realize that a touchscreen laptop or desktop is a really stupid idea.

For one thing, the OS is not designed around touch, and no matter how much you tell yourself that it’s just like using a mouse, that is not actually true. More importantly, though, you start poking at an upright screen for any length of time, and it is going to start getting really uncomfortable, and if it’s a laptop, you will quickly find yourself holding the back for the screen to keep it from flapping around.
