Understanding something doesn’t mean you agree with it.

Last night and today, I have been reading a bunch of different “Why Trump won” analyses. The main thing I have taken away from them so far is that there are a lot of factors, and it is still early in terms of sifting through the election data.

A thought I have have had repeatedly through the run-up to and aftermath of this election is that there is a difference worth noting between understanding why someone acts or thinks a certain way and justifying or defending it.

I am trying to keep that in mind as I read this stuff and think about it. It is very easy for the former to be interpreted as the latter, or worse, for the former to slide into the latter, and I think we need to be explicit, deliberate, and clear with ourselves and with others as we talk through this stuff.
