Calling senators about Betsy DeVos

I just got done calling various Senators to ask them to oppose Betsy DeVos as the Secretary of Education. Here is the script I wrote up for myself:

Hi, my name is XXXX, and I live in XXXX. I am calling to ask the Senator to oppose Betsy DeVos as the Secretary of Education.

She displayed a disturbing lack of understanding of basic education policy at her confirmation hearing last week, and I strongly believe that someone whose career has been devoted to undermining the public education system in this country has no business being in charge of it.

I called Senator Warren's office in DC and left a voicemail there. The voicemail was full at Senator Markey's DC office, so I called his Boston office and got a live human (who was quite pleasant).

Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions Committee. His DC office line was busy all morning, so I started working my down through his local offices in Tennessee. I eventually got through to voicemail in his Nashville office. I added a line to my script saying that while I understood his primary duty is to his constituents in Tennessee, I was contacting him in his role as HELP Committee chair.

My final call was to Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), who is the ranking member of the HELP Committee. I left a voicemail at her DC office.

All told, it took about fifteen minutes, including writing the script and looking up the various office numbers.
