Calling senators to oppose Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions

Today I spent a little bit of time calling various US Senators to ask them to oppose Jeff Sessions' nomination for Attorney General. You can do it too!

Here is the script I wrote for myself:

Hi, my name is XXXX, and I live in XXXX. (I understand the Senator’s primary responsibility is to her/his constituents, but in her/his role as Senate Judiciary Committee chair/ranking member…) I am calling to ask the Senator to oppose Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

Senator Sessions’ retrograde record on racial justice and civil rights is not what we need to move the country forward. I hope the Senator will press the White House to nominate someone more in line with the diverse majority of US citizens.

Thanks.

First I called my Senators, Elizabeth Warren (202-224-4543) and Ed Markey (202-224-2742). I left a voicemail at Warren's DC office. Voicemail was full at both Markey's DC and Boston offices, but I eventually got through to a live human at the Springfield office (where I also let them know about the full mailboxes at their other offices).

Then I called Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassely (R-IA) (202-224-3744). I left a voicemail at his DC office.

Finally, I called the Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) (202-224-3841) the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee. Multiple attempts to get through to her DC office yielded either busy signals or full mailboxes, so I called her San Francisco office, where I was able to leave a voicemail.

It was about ten minutes' worth of effort.

Tomorrow, it's on to making the phone rounds about Steve "I forgot about $100 million" Mnuchin's unfitness for Secretary of the Treasury.
