I have been spending a lot of time the past few days listening to William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops, which I had never encountered before.
Basinski is an experimental musician, and to create these works, he created brief loops of ambient music on magnetic tape and then recorded them as they played over and over. With each play of the loop, bits of the magnetic media come off, causing a slow, gradual deterioration of the sound.
It is probably not everyone’s cup of tea, but I find this music fascinating.
The first volume is here. I am not embedding it directly because it contains video footage from New York City the day of September 11 filmed by Mr. Basinski from his rooftop while he happened to be recording the pieces. I know that such imagery can still be sensitive for a lot of people, so I will leave it up you.
