Luke Skywalker is right. It’s time for the Jedi to end.

Following the release of the first teaser for The Last Jedi, there is apparently some noise amongst Star Wars fandom about how Luke Skywalker has gone bad or some such.

A few initial thoughts come to mind:

  1. It's just a teaser, and one ought not try to divine too many detailed plot points from it.
  2. Fandom mostly tends to be wrong about everything.
  3. This theory is nonsense.

Nanci from the Tosche Station podcast has a good post in support of point #3.

The part of the teaser that I find most intriguing is Luke's line about how it is time for the Jedi to end, because that has been my opinion for quite some time. It's not that I like the Empire—I hate it. But the Jedi…

In the run-up to the release of The Force Awakens, I rewatched Episodes 1-6 in chronological order. I was surprised in rewatching the prequel trilogy how badly the Jedi order comes off. For one thing, they treat Anakin like shit pretty nonstop throughout Episodes 1 and 2, and then are shocked in Episode 3 when he turns on them.

More than that, what struck me most was the portion of The Phantom Menace when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan take Anakin off Tatooine. Planet run by a vile gangster who traffics in slavery? Nah, can't be bothered to do anything about that. They can't even take the trouble to get Shmi Skywalker off the planet—all that matters to the Jedi is their prophecy of the Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force. All the rest of you poor suckers are shit out of luck. Sorry.

I will not go so far as to say that the Jedi deserve what happened to them at the end of Revenge Of the Sith—no one deserves that—but they certainly did not help themselves. This bunch was supposed to be the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, and yet they sat on their thumbs watching while slavery proliferated, and they allowed themselves to become Palpatine’s dupes. It is like they focused on the peace and order part, and forgot about justice.

So thirtyish years after the fall of the Galactic Empire and now faced with the rise of the New Order from its ashes, why would anyone want the Jedi back? They didn’t help anyone last time around, so what purpose could they serve now?
