Two ideas that can be simultaneously true:
- Oprah Winfrey's speech at the Golden Globes last night was inspiring, and we need a lot more public figures speaking out like that.
- Electing TV stars and other famous people with no political or policy experience to public office is a bad idea.
I will admit that I actually have no idea what her public policy experience or expertise might be. I suspect that no one else—including most of the people filling my timeline with "Oprah 2020!" tweets—does either.
Would she be an improvement over the vile ignoramus currently spilling Doritos on the White House floor and wiping his French-fry-grease-smeared fingers on the upholstery? Sure. Would she be a good President? I'm not sure.
What bothers me is that we have one speech and suddenly there are apparently actual serious conversations about Oprah for President.
