Rocket launches are cool. Billionaire industrialist, less so.

A few things about yesterday’s successful test launch of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy:

  1. It is nearly always cool and exciting to watch a rocket launch.
  2. I am happy for all the people at SpaceX who worked to make the launch happen.
  3. I am less excited that we all seem to be happy to cede the realm of space exploration and interplanetary travel to a private corporation owned by a billionaire who builds expensive toys for rich people and everyone else be damned.

The fact that Musk put one of his own cars on the top of the rocket is really just the icing on the cake.

I am much more interested in and excited about NASA’s Space Launch System, which is expected to begin test launches next year.
